6-car crash puts girl in critical condition

A six-car wreck left a young girl in the hospital, in critical condition. She has a broken leg and bleeding around her brain.

The girl was with her mother at the time of the accident, going to Long John Silver's to get lunch. It was about two o'clock in the afternoon. A number of cars had stopped at a stoplight when a 24-year-old man ran into the back of two of the vehicles in a Ford F-150. The impact slammed numerous cars into each other.

The driver in the F-150 kept going through intersection, over the curb, and into the grass. Eventually he ran into a fence and stopped.

Police say that the man was under the influence. They took a blood sample, which will tell them if he had been using drugs or alcohol, though they do not know what it was at this time.

The 6-year-old girl's condition is perilous because of swelling by her brain. Doctors want to operate on her leg, but they need to wait for it to go down before they do.

The girl's mother was also hurt, breaking her leg in a number of different spots. She needed surgery, as well.

The driver of the pickup truck was not hurt. He apparently had a diesel gas tank in his truck bed, and it was damaged, resulting in about 74 gallons of fuel leaking onto the road.

As a parent, your first concern when a child is seriously injured is always getting the best medical treatment you can. However, it's important to remember that this treatment can get very expensive, very quickly. You may also want to think about your rights to financial compensation.
