Keeping motorcyclists safe on the roadways

Motorcycle riders can be in a vulnerable position on the roadways and can be particularly susceptible to the negligence of careless or inattentive drivers. With that in mind, Ohio requires motorcyclists to learn about ways to drive defensively as part of the training they must go through to get a motorcycle license. Unfortunately, car drivers don't always pay the same kind of attention to the issue.

There are ways drivers can increase the chances of keeping motorcyclists safe on the roadways and also legal resources available to motorcycle accident victims who have been harmed by a negligent driver.

According to some sources, as many as 50% of all motorcycle accidents involve another vehicle. Most of these are caused by a car or truck driver who fails to see a smaller motorcycle and violates the motorcyclist's right of way. Among motorists, motorcyclists are uniquely vulnerable to collisions. A small tap that might be nothing more than a fender-bender between two cars can send a motorcyclist flying off their vehicle at high speed, perhaps into the path of oncoming traffic. The result is that motorcycle accidents are much more likely than other types of motor vehicle accidents to lead to permanent injury or death.

It's important for injured motorcyclists to be familiar with ways a personal injury claim for damages can help them. A personal injury lawsuit can hold a negligent driver liable for the injured party's damages, including medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and more. Since the injuries in these accidents are often severe, the damages in these cases are often extremely high. As a result, these cases can be highly contentious and difficult. It's important for the injured or their families to speak with an experienced attorney.
